As Ive told him repeatedly, the votes arent there to alter it, the Republican leader told POLITICO Playbooks Anna Palmer and Jake Sherman within an interview Wednesday. They just arent there. Its not just for me.

The presidents latest call to lose the 60-vote threshold to shepherd through legislation came on a private meeting Tuesday with House and Senate Republicans, with Trump telling lawmakers to improve the guidelines before Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) does.

McConnell, however, sees no need.

The Kentucky Republican, who this month took over as the longest-serving GOP Senate leader, touted Trumps presidency because the best year and a half to the GOP since he first found the Senate in 1985 noting the passage of massive tax cuts and confirmation on the string of conservative judges, including Top court Justice Neil Gorsuch.

So the president has much being pleased about, McConnell said. I dont think the legislative filibuster, that is around for many years, is a problem. Plus it does, I do believe, generate on many occasions a cute bipartisan solution, and i also dont think thats always unhealthy for the united states. Perform involve some pretty big differences about a volume of things, but there are a lot of things perform together.

The GOP leader estimated that two-thirds of his caucus would oppose ending the legislative filibuster. And they would likely be accompanied by all Democrats. But in addition to Republicans lacking the votes, McConnell is using long view, acknowledging that this GOP wont always hold the majority.

I think both sides, previously being down and up numerous times, know the advantages when youre not inside majority, he explained on the filibuster. What I remind obama of occasionally when you have this discussion is but for we could have socialized medicine [and] right-to-work might have been eliminated in the united states.

In the nearly 45-minute interview, McConnell also acknowledged disagreements involving the president as well as some Senate Republicans on issues just like tariffs and immigration.

Republican Sens. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania are pushing an amendment that might allow Congress to approve or disapprove of tariffs levied against countries on national security justifications.

McConnell said its unclear whether that measure should come up for debate on the farm bill the chamber is considering.

I simply dont know whether theres gonna be a vote over the Corker proposal, McConnell said. I dont object to obtaining vote, nonetheless dont know at the start of this procedure whats gonna happen.

A small number of of senators and that is taking care of legislation to battle migrant family separations in the southern border. The Senate took up immigration legislation in February, however, not 1 measure mustered enough votes for passage, for example the White Houses proposal.

Im in support of addressing that narrowly and fixing it, McConnell said of the family separations. I hear the property may try to pass something along those lines, therefore, if we cant do comprehensive [immigration reform] lets a minimum of fix several of the glaring problems along at the border when using the children reunification issue and do it quickly.

McConnell declined to calculate how either chamber will be looking following your midterms. But he insisted every Republican candidate is electable and highlighted Montana, North Dakota, Missouri, Indiana and West Virginia as competitive states where Senate Republicans are saved to offense; the party is defending competitive seats in Arizona, Nevada and Tennessee, he said.

But I still am not falling in love with the map or thinking the map alone will deliver this, McConnell added, dealing with that Republicans are simply just defending nine seats while Democrats have 24 seats up this year. Every one of these brilliant are just going to be a knockdown, drag-out, eye-gouging, shin-kicking contest to the finale.
